SATE Literacy Session

Building Literacy Skills with SATE
Posted on 03/08/2023
On March 2nd, Queen Mary Street Public School welcomed parents and guardians for a Literacy Session presented through the OCDSB’s Student Achievement Through Equity (SATE) Inquiry. The goal of the session was to equip parents of kindergarten and grade 1/2 students with techniques to help them support their children's literacy skills during their foundational years.

The session was led by SATE staff Jessica and Lily, and supported by Principal Haslam. At the event, parents and caregivers explored ways to support children in learning the alphabet, pencil grip, and printing skills; the importance of talk in their language; and strategies for building vocabulary. Each family received a resource kit to apply these skills at home, including an alphabet chart, directions for letter formation, a notebook, and letter flash cards.

Parents and caregivers appreciated the opportunity to discuss ways to build literacy skills at home. Here’s some of the feedback they shared:

quote

“This session explained how they teach these skills in school so we can teach them at home the same way.”

“Definitely [this session] helped a lot. Will be practicing this more at home with my daughter. It was a great session!”

Thank you to all those who attended, and to the SATE and Queen Mary St. P.S. staff who collaborated to make this event possible!
